Harrison Kinzler

GIS Consultant

Mr. Kinzler provides technical assistance for the National Mine Map Repository (NMMR), Office of Surface Mining, Department of theInterior. The NMMR is the nation’s resource for coal mine maps, as well as other hard rock minerals. There are two processes used to archive these maps, image and data.

Image archiving is achieved by scanning mine maps using Cruse scanning equipment (https://crusescanner.us/). After scanning, images are loaded into Adobe Photoshop for processing, appending aNMMR logo and scale bar, as well as NMMR’s “Document Number”, which allows images to be tracked within NMMR’s database.

Data archiving involves carefully observing each mine map image and determine where the mine is located within the United States. Additional information from the mine map (mine name, company name, mineral mined, coal seam, MSHA ID to name a few) is also collected for easier retrieval in NMMR’s database.
